Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for teachers across the state to mark this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday, October 2, by the governor’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola.
According to the statement, the declaration is specifically for teachers in the state and is intended to recognise their contributions to education and human capital development.
World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5 to celebrate teachers and highlight their contributions to the development of individuals and societies.
The 2026 celebration falls on a Monday, making the governor’s declaration applicable to that day.
Governor AbdulRazaq congratulated teachers across Kwara on the occasion and acknowledged their role in educating and preparing young people for the future.
He also commended educators in the state for their commitment and resilience in carrying out their responsibilities despite the challenges associated with the profession.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of teachers and the development of the education sector, according to the statement.
The declaration provides teachers with an official work-free day to commemorate World Teachers’ Day and participate in activities associated with the annual observance.
World Teachers’ Day was established in 1994 by UNESCO and is held annually to commemorate the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which addresses teachers’ rights, responsibilities and working conditions.
The Kwara announcement therefore places October 5 as a special work-free day for teachers in the state, while the declaration does not amount to a general public holiday for all workers or residents of Kwara.
