The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in the just concluded Rivers State Local Government elections, clinching 20 out of the 23 chairmanship seats across the state.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has long dominated the political landscape in Rivers, managed to secure only three local government areas.
The official results were declared by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), bringing to an end weeks of anticipation over the polls.
Political watchers say the outcome reflects a dramatic shift in Rivers politics, where the APC, once seen as an underdog, has now gained firm grassroots control.
Interestingly, both APC and PDP had earlier adopted consensus candidates in many areas to avoid prolonged party crises. Analysts link this unusual alignment to the enduring influence of former Governor and now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, whose political network cuts across party lines in the state.
For the PDP, the results represent a major setback, trimming its dominance to just three LGAs. On the other hand, APC’s widespread win is seen as a breakthrough that could redefine political calculations ahead of future state and national elections.
Meanwhile, RSIEC has indicated that collation of councillorship results is still ongoing and will be made public in due course.
The big question now is whether this wave of consensus politics will translate into stability at the grassroots or open a new chapter of political rivalry as the chairmen assume office.
