The Nigeria Police Force has officially suspended the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide following an interim court order restraining the action. The decision comes barely weeks after the Force announced plans to resume enforcement as part of measures to strengthen public safety and internal security.
On December 15, 2025, the Police had declared that enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy would recommence from January 2, 2026. The announcement generated widespread public attention, given past controversies surrounding the policy and its impact on motorists across the country.
However, developments at the Federal High Court altered the timeline. On December 17, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025, restraining it from proceeding with the enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or until the order is vacated.
According to the police, the interim order legally prevents the Force from implementing the policy at this time. In adherence to constitutional provisions and respect for judicial authority, the Police have formally entered appearance in the case, raised preliminary objections, and applied for the vacation of the court order.
The court has since adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, when further proceedings are expected to take place. Until then, the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy remains on hold across all states of the federation.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while carrying out its mandate of protecting lives and property. He stressed that compliance with court orders remains a fundamental principle guiding police operations.
Despite the suspension, the Police leadership emphasized that the Force will continue to deploy lawful and intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges nationwide. These efforts, according to the IGP, are aimed at maintaining public order and safeguarding citizens without violating legal boundaries.
Members of the public have been assured that the Nigeria Police Force will provide timely updates and clear guidance after the court reaches a decision on the matter. The Force noted that any future action regarding the Tinted Glass Permit policy will be guided strictly by the outcome of the judicial process.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on January 1, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, from the Police Headquarters in Abuja, urging citizens to remain calm and law-abiding as the legal process runs its course.
