Over a month after Lagos State began enforcing its single-use plastics ban, the streets still tell a different story.
The July 1 prohibition, targeting Styrofoam containers, disposable cutlery, straws, and plastic bags, was designed to tackle the city’s worsening waste crisis — but implementation is proving far more difficult than drafting the policy.
Environmental data from 2024 shows Lagos produced an estimated 870,000 tons of plastic waste, making it one of the most polluted cities globally. Yet, traders, street food sellers, and small businesses continue to use banned plastics, citing the high cost and scarcity of biodegradable alternatives.
Activists argue that without consistent enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and affordable substitutes, the ban risks becoming more symbolic than effective.
