Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, alongside his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until January 7, when the court is expected to rule on their bail applications.
The order was issued on Friday by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court after hearing arguments from both the defence and the prosecution regarding the bail requests filed by the defendants.
Malami, his son, and a third defendant, Hajia Bashir Asabe, a staff member of Ramadiya Property Limited, are currently standing trial over alleged ₦9 billion money laundering charges instituted by the Federal Government.
After listening to submissions from both parties, Justice Nwite ruled that the defendants should remain in custody pending the court’s decision on the bail applications.
The trial judge explained that due to the volume of pending rulings he must deliver in his capacity as a vacation judge, he would be unable to give an immediate decision on the bail motions.
Justice Nwite consequently fixed January 7 for the delivery of the ruling on the bail applications.
The bail motions were argued on behalf of the defendants by Joseph Daudu, SAN, while Emmanuel Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the applications on behalf of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The case forms part of ongoing efforts by anti-corruption agencies to prosecute high-profile money laundering allegations in Nigeria’s judicial system.
