Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has declared that every naira allegedly misappropriated from Kaduna State Government during the eight-year administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai must be recovered and returned to the state treasury.
Addressing journalists in Kaduna at a press briefing on Sunday, Sani said his priority was to ensure accountability and transparency over financial transactions that took place between 2015 and 2023, the period El-Rufai governed the state.
According to Sani, the administration under El-Rufai obtained significant loans, notably a $350 million facility which he claimed was largely unaccounted for. He alleged that only a few projects, particularly in Kaduna North Local Government Area, resulted from the loan, leaving the state heavily indebted.
Sani described the El-Rufai era as marked by “tyranny and abuse of the rule of law”, stressing that the hardship experienced by many residents was linked to alleged mismanagement of public resources.
He said efforts would be made to ensure that misused or stolen funds are identified and returned so that they could be used for the benefit of the people of Kaduna State.
The former lawmaker also expressed optimism about the political future of the state, indicating support for the re-election campaigns of Governor Uba Sani and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged political actors to respect zoning principles in national leadership contests, particularly calling for respect for rotation of power.
Shehu Sani’s call follows earlier moves by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which set up panels to investigate financial conducts under El-Rufai’s administration.
The panels have recommended further scrutiny by anti-graft agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over suspected financial impropriety involving hundreds of billions of naira.
