A major air operation by Nigerian security forces has reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on suspected terrorists in Yankuzo community, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in another offensive against armed groups operating across the state.
The operation was reportedly carried out on Monday evening, September 7, by forces operating under Operation FANSAN YANMA, as part of sustained efforts to disrupt terrorist networks and deny them freedom of movement in the North-West.
Local sources cited in reports said about five military aircraft participated in the coordinated operation, targeting suspected terrorists gathered around the Yankuzo area. Several fighters were reportedly killed, although an official figure for the casualties was not immediately available.
One of those reportedly killed in the airstrike was identified by local sources as Isiya Gurgu, said to be an associate of the notorious bandit leader known as Musa Commander. The latter has been linked in local accounts to the wider Ado Aleru network.
The reported strike comes against the backdrop of continued military pressure on armed groups operating in Zamfara. Operation FANSAN YANMA has carried out a series of ground and air operations in the state in recent months, with security forces repeatedly targeting terrorist formations and disrupting planned attacks.
Sources said the operation around Yankuzo was conducted with caution to reduce the possibility of civilian casualties. According to the accounts, the engagement focused on individuals suspected of belonging to the armed group, particularly those reportedly carrying weapons or wearing military-style clothing.
Several other suspected fighters were also said to have sustained injuries during the bombardment, while the full extent of the casualties was expected to become clearer as security authorities assessed the aftermath.
Yankuzo has long been associated with the activities of armed groups in Tsafe, with the Nigerian military previously identifying notorious bandit leader Ado Aliero as being from the community.
The latest operation is part of the broader military campaign to weaken terrorist and bandit networks across Zamfara and neighbouring states. Recent operations by Operation FANSAN YANMA have also resulted in reported terrorist casualties, rescued civilians and the recovery of weapons and other equipment.
The reported airstrike could represent another significant setback for armed groups using forested communities in Zamfara as bases for attacks, abductions and other criminal activities.
However, the identities of all those affected and the precise number of casualties remain subject to further confirmation. Security agencies are expected to provide additional details as assessment of the operation continues.
