BREAKING: Sweden to Pay Immigrants $34,000 to Voluntarily Return Home from 2026

Posted on October 2, 2025October 2, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on BREAKING: Sweden to Pay Immigrants $34,000 to Voluntarily Return Home from 2026

In a move that is already sparking debate across the global migration community, the Swedish government has announced plans to offer immigrants up to $34,000 (about ₦54 million) if they choose to voluntarily return to their home countries starting in 2026.

The scheme, described by Stockholm as part of a “paradigm shift” in migration policy, is designed to encourage those who feel unable to integrate or build a life in Sweden to go back home with financial support.

Currently, Sweden offers far smaller sums, about SEK 40,000 (roughly $3,800) for families, but the new package will see the grant rise sharply to SEK 350,000 (around $34,000).

For Nigerians, this development is especially significant. Sweden, like several other European nations, has been a destination for young Nigerians seeking better opportunities through work, study, or asylum.

With unemployment and economic hardship pushing many to “japa” abroad, news of this incentive could tempt some who are already struggling in Europe to reconsider and return with capital to start afresh.

According to the Swedish government, eligibility will be limited to those who already hold legal residence permits, such as refugees or persons granted protection along with their families.

It will not apply to migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected or those facing deportation.

Authorities say the plan will be funded through the 2025 national budget and will include strict checks to prevent fraud.

While some Swedish politicians argue the move will save long-term costs and reduce pressure on the welfare system, critics believe the high payout may not necessarily lead to mass voluntary returns.

In Nigeria, however, the idea of coming back with millions of naira in support may prove attractive, especially for those who have faced difficulties integrating into European society.

This policy adds a new dimension to the global migration debate. For many Nigerians abroad, the decision will now be whether to remain in Europe despite challenges or to take advantage of the Swedish offer and return home with a financial cushion large enough to begin a new chapter.
