Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the Southeast.
Governor Mbah announced his defection on Tuesday, citing a desire to align Enugu with the Federal Government’s development agenda. He described the decision as one made after “deep reflection,” stressing that leadership sometimes requires tough but purposeful choices.
His move did not come alone. Virtually the entire Enugu State Executive Council including commissioners, advisers, and local government chairmen reportedly followed him to the ruling party.
The PDP State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, and several lawmakers across both state and national assemblies are also said to be preparing to defect.
Mbah’s exit from the PDP deals a heavy blow to a party that has held political dominance in Enugu since 1999. Analysts say the defection could tilt the balance of power ahead of the 2027 general elections and strengthen APC’s foothold in the Southeast.
Reactions have been divided. While APC leaders have hailed the move as a victory for the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” some PDP loyalists warn it could backfire, describing it as a risky political gamble.
With this latest development, Enugu’s political landscape enters a new phase as both parties prepare for what promises to be an intense contest in the coming years.
