BREAKING: Nigeria’s Federal Government Suspends Sachet Alcohol Ban, NAFDAC Told to Stand Down!

Posted on February 11, 2026February 11, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on BREAKING: Nigeria’s Federal Government Suspends Sachet Alcohol Ban, NAFDAC Told to Stand Down!

In an unexpected U-turn that has sent shockwaves through the beverages industry and across social media, the Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered an indefinite suspension of all enforcement measures related to the controversial ban on sachet-packaged alcoholic beverages, stopping the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from proceeding with the crackdown for now.

The dramatic directive came from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and was communicated in a statement that has left stakeholders, lawmakers, and consumers scrambling for clarity. According to the statement, all actions being taken to implement the sack-small-alcohol policy must be halted immediately until broad consultations are completed and a final policy position is released.

The move follows an official letter from the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control raising serious concerns about NAFDAC’s rushed implementation without adequate coordination with other branches of government. The OSGF explained that the matter is now under review in line with its coordinating role over national policy decisions.

NAFDAC had previously announced it would enforce a ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and small bottles below 200ml by the end of December 2025, citing public health worries, especially regarding youth access and alcohol misuse. That decision was also backed by a firm resolution from the Senate late last year urging strict compliance and zero extensions.

But critics of the ban, including industry bodies like the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) had argued vigorously that the policy would devastate jobs, threaten local investment, and fuel illicit alcohol trade. MAN even accused NAFDAC of ignoring Federal Government and legislative directives when it moved ahead with enforcement early this year.

Civil society groups and consumer advocates have also been sharply divided. While some organisations backed NAFDAC’s stance as a needed public health intervention to protect children and youth from easy access to cheap, high-strength alcohol, others saw it as heavy-handed and potentially harmful to small businesses and informal sector workers.

The suspension order explicitly states that any enforcement action taken by NAFDAC or other agencies without clearance from the OSGF is considered void, meaning warnings, raids, or compliance notices issued in recent weeks are no longer valid until the situation is resolved.

Industry analysts say this abrupt policy freeze injects uncertainty into the regulatory environment, with producers, distributors and retailers of sachet-alcohol products left in limbo as investors and workers watch nervously for the government’s next move.

For consumers, especially in rural and urban low-income communities where sachet alcohol is widely sold, the suspension means they can continue buying these products legally for the moment — but the possibility of a reinstated ban after consultations still looms large.

As the Federal Government embarks on further consultations with lawmakers, public health experts, industry leaders and civil society stakeholders, all eyes are now on Abuja for the next, definitive policy announcement that could reshape Nigeria’s alcohol regulation landscape for years to come.
