17 Offenders Fined ₦40,000 Each for Open Urination and Defecation in Lagos State

Posted on February 21, 2026February 21, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on 17 Offenders Fined ₦40,000 Each for Open Urination and Defecation in Lagos State

Seventeen individuals have been convicted for open urination and defecation in parts of Lagos, following a sanitation enforcement operation by state authorities. The offenders were apprehended during routine environmental monitoring aimed at curbing public health violations across the state.

The convictions were secured at a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, where the defendants were arraigned on charges bordering on conduct likely to cause environmental nuisance. The court found them guilty after reviewing the facts presented.

Each of the offenders was sentenced to pay a fine of ₦40,000 or serve one month imprisonment in default of payment. The ruling reinforces the state government’s zero-tolerance stance toward acts that compromise public sanitation and community health standards.

The enforcement exercise was carried out by officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), whose environmental task force continues to patrol major streets and public spaces to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations.

Authorities said the arrests were made in areas within the Oshodi-Isolo axis, a densely populated commercial corridor where public sanitation violations have been a recurring concern. The offenders were taken into custody and charged in line with existing environmental laws.

The state government has repeatedly warned residents against indiscriminate urination and defecation in public places, stressing that such actions pose serious health and environmental risks. Officials argue that open defecation contributes to the spread of communicable diseases and undermines efforts to maintain a clean urban environment.

Commenting on the development, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated that enforcement would remain consistent and impartial. He emphasized that residents must make use of designated public toilets and sanitation facilities provided across the city.

The commissioner further noted that the government’s sanitation drive is part of broader efforts to improve hygiene standards in Lagos, Africa’s most populous city. According to him, sustained enforcement is necessary to achieve long-term environmental sustainability goals.

Environmental officials maintain that mobile courts will continue to sit across various districts to ensure swift prosecution of offenders. They also urged community leaders and market associations to support public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal and sanitation practices.

The latest convictions underscore the state’s renewed commitment to enforcing environmental laws and discouraging behavior that threatens public health. Residents have been advised to comply with sanitation regulations, as authorities signal that further violations will attract similar penalties.
