The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ali Giwa as the new Force New Media Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
The appointment forms part of a restructuring of the police communication system aimed at strengthening the Force’s digital engagement and improving communication with the public through online platforms.
The development was confirmed by the former Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who disclosed the decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to information from police sources, the new role is tied to the creation of a New Media Office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The office is expected to coordinate the Nigeria Police Force’s social media presence and digital communication strategy, while enhancing public awareness about police activities and operations.
CSP Giwa is an experienced officer with more than 15 years of service in the Nigeria Police Force. He currently serves as a cybersecurity specialist at the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja.
Over the course of his career, he has held several positions including Assistant Police Public Relations Officer at the Obalende Annex in Lagos, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, and Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Cooperative Multi-Purpose Society Limited.
He has also served as Police Assistant to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in the Department of Logistics and Supply and worked in various operational roles such as crime officer, surveillance officer, and human rights officer in different police formations.
The appointment comes amid broader changes in the police communication structure, including the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid as the new Force Public Relations Officer.
Police authorities say the new media unit will play a key role in modernising the Force’s communication strategy and improving transparency and engagement with Nigerians in the digital space.
