Arsenal have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Brazilian midfielder and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães for a guaranteed fee of £75 million, bringing a prolonged transfer saga involving the Premier League champions to a decisive stage.
The agreement was reached after weeks of negotiations between the two clubs, with Arsenal eventually finding a compromise that satisfied Newcastle’s valuation of their influential midfielder. Guimarães has now been given permission to travel to London for a medical ahead of completing the move.
The 28-year-old Brazilian had emerged as one of Arsenal’s major midfield targets, with manager Mikel Arteta keen to strengthen his squad as the club prepares to defend its Premier League title and compete on multiple fronts.
According to reports, Arsenal initially made a proposal worth £60 million, while Newcastle had been seeking a substantially higher figure. Negotiations eventually produced a £75 million agreement, with reports indicating that the guaranteed fee will be paid without additional performance-related add-ons.
Guimarães is expected to undergo his medical in London before the transfer can be formally completed. His personal terms are understood not to represent an obstacle, meaning the medical and final administrative procedures are the major steps remaining before the Brazilian becomes an Arsenal player.
The proposed move would bring an end to Guimarães’ four-year association with Newcastle. He joined the Tyneside club from French side Lyon in January 2022 and quickly established himself as one of Newcastle’s most important players, eventually becoming club captain.
During his Newcastle career, Guimarães made 153 Premier League appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists. His performances in midfield earned him widespread recognition for his ability to win possession, progress the ball and contribute to attacks.
His departure represents another major change at Newcastle during a turbulent summer transfer window. The club has already seen several important figures leave, making the sale of its captain another significant development for the new-look side.
For Arsenal, meanwhile, the signing represents a major statement of intent. Guimarães would add experience, physicality, technical quality and leadership to a midfield that already includes Declan Rice, while giving Arteta another high-level option for controlling games and progressing possession.
The Brazilian midfielder’s arrival would also take Arsenal’s spending on major additions during the current transfer window beyond the £100 million mark, underlining the club’s ambition after its successful previous campaign. Arsenal are continuing to assess other areas of the squad as they seek to maintain their domestic dominance and compete for further honours.
With the transfer fee now agreed and Guimarães preparing for his medical, the long-running pursuit has entered its final phase. Barring any late complication during the medical or completion of the formal paperwork, Arsenal are set to welcome the Newcastle captain as one of the most significant additions to their squad this summer.
