Chelsea and Manchester City face an uphill battle to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after both English sides suffered heavy defeats in their Round of 16 first-leg matches on Wednesday night.
Defending champions Paris Saint‑Germain defeated Chelsea FC 5–2 at the Parc des Princes in Paris, while Real Madrid CF thrashed Manchester City FC 3–0 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Both results leave the Premier League clubs with daunting tasks ahead of next week’s return legs.
In Paris, PSG delivered a powerful late surge to secure a 5–2 victory over Chelsea in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie. The French champions initially took the lead through Bradley Barcola in the 10th minute, but Chelsea equalised through Malo Gusto. Ousmane Dembélé restored PSG’s advantage before halftime, only for Enzo Fernández to draw the English side level again early in the second half.
However, the match swung dramatically in the final 20 minutes. Vitinha scored to make it 3–2 before substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck twice late on to seal a commanding victory for the hosts.
The result gives PSG a three-goal cushion ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge, putting Chelsea under immense pressure to produce a major comeback.
In Spain, Real Madrid delivered a clinical performance to defeat Manchester City 3–0 at the Bernabéu. Midfielder Federico Valverde was the star of the night, scoring a stunning first-half hat-trick to put the Spanish giants firmly in control of the tie.
Valverde completed his treble before halftime, marking the first hat-trick of his professional career and leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with a mountain to climb before the return leg in Manchester.
Despite enjoying more possession and creating chances, City were unable to break down Madrid’s defence and now face the challenge of overturning a three-goal deficit at the Etihad Stadium.
With the second legs scheduled for next week, both Chelsea and Manchester City still have a mathematical chance of progressing. However, they must deliver near-perfect performances to overturn sizeable deficits against two of Europe’s most experienced Champions League sides.
Chelsea need at least a three-goal win at Stamford Bridge to force extra time, while Manchester City must produce a similar margin at home against Real Madrid to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
Whether the Premier League duo can stage dramatic comebacks or whether PSG and Real Madrid will comfortably advance remains one of the major storylines heading into the decisive second-leg clashes.
