The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence-powered virtual assistant designed to enhance the training, efficiency, and operational readiness of its staff ahead of the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. The innovation marks a major technological advancement in the Commission’s drive to improve election management through digital transformation.
According to INEC, the virtual assistant—known as the INEC Training Virtual Assistant (INECTrainingBot)—was created to provide 24-hour interactive training support for electoral officers and ad-hoc staff. The platform, which operates through Telegram, offers access to step-by-step modules, guidelines, and audiovisual materials to ensure seamless understanding of election procedures and equipment handling.
The Commission explained that the virtual assistant is part of its continuous effort to build capacity among election personnel and guarantee the credibility of the electoral process. Through this AI tool, staff can conveniently access real-time information on voter accreditation, result transmission, and polling unit operations, thereby reducing human errors and improving transparency during the election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, noted that the initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader commitment to leveraging technology to improve electoral integrity. He emphasized that with the use of artificial intelligence, INEC aims to ensure that all personnel—whether on the field or at the secretariat—can undergo consistent training regardless of location or time constraints.
The introduction of the AI-powered training platform also reflects INEC’s readiness to embrace global best practices in election management. By using artificial intelligence to simulate scenarios, provide feedback, and deliver continuous updates, the system is expected to improve operational coordination ahead of the highly anticipated Anambra governorship election.
As part of its pre-election preparations, INEC also announced that it has concluded arrangements for the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to newly registered voters in Anambra State between October 22 and 26. The exercise is targeted at ensuring that all eligible voters have access to their PVCs before the November 8 poll.
In addition, the Commission disclosed that it will conduct a mock accreditation exercise on October 25 across selected polling units in the three senatorial districts of Anambra State. The test run will assess the functionality of the upgraded Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the efficiency of result transmission from polling units to the central portal.
INEC reassured the public that all measures are being put in place to ensure a free, fair, and credible election. It stated that the integration of artificial intelligence into its training system would not only improve staff performance but also foster transparency and accountability in the management of electoral logistics and results.
Observers and civil society groups have commended the Commission for taking a proactive approach to election preparation. Many analysts believe that the use of AI in staff training will significantly reduce irregularities and confusion often associated with polling day activities, thereby enhancing voters’ confidence in the electoral process.
With less than two weeks to the election, INEC’s deployment of an AI-driven virtual assistant represents a bold step toward modernizing Nigeria’s electoral operations. As the countdown to November 8 continues, the Commission’s commitment to innovation and preparedness may well set a new standard for how elections are conducted in the country.
