The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran. The seasoned actor reportedly passed away on Friday after a brief illness in Lagos.
A Legendary Career in Film and Theatre
Chief Kanran was one of the most respected faces in Yoruba cinema, admired for his commanding roles as wealthy and influential characters. His versatility saw him perform on stage, television, and film, leaving audiences captivated for decades.
He began acting as a young boy in Easter and Christmas drama productions, before formally studying at the University of Lagos’s Centre for Cultural Studies and later obtaining a diploma in directing, acting, and film production at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Guided by legendary mentors such as the late Ayanfemi Phillips, Kanran steadily built a career that spanned over five decades. Beyond Yoruba-language films, he also featured in English productions, notably portraying General Phillips in several episodes of the television soap Megafortune.

Trials and Hardships
Despite his remarkable contributions to Nollywood, Chief Kanran endured a series of personal setbacks in later years. A fire accident destroyed his home, vehicles, and studio equipment worth hundreds of millions of naira. The tragedy left him homeless and struggling to recover his once-thriving career.
In interviews, he shared how he had been forced to live in a church for survival, while appealing for support from well-meaning Nigerians and industry stakeholders. His story became a symbol of the challenges many veterans face after decades of service to the entertainment industry.
Enduring Legacy
Chief Kanran’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian theatre and film. His deep baritone, regal presence, and ability to breathe life into diverse roles earned him a place among Nollywood’s finest.
He will be remembered not only for his artistry but also for his resilience in the face of hardship, his mentorship of younger actors, and his lasting imprint on Yoruba cinema.
As colleagues and fans pour in tributes, the industry reflects on the loss of a cultural icon whose contributions will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and audiences.
