Outrage has erupted after a video showing Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody began circulating online.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Portable was arrested following allegations of assault by one of his partners, Omobolarinde Akinyanju, also known as Ashabi Simple. However, the video, which shows the Zazoo crooner shirtless, handcuffed, and visibly distressed in what appears to be a police holding area, has sparked widespread condemnation from fans and the public.
Oluseye Babaseyi, the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, stated on Sunday that the incident is under investigation. He assured that any officer found culpable would face legal and disciplinary action.
“Yes, he was arrested and is in our custody, but what is important is addressing the alleged assault at the station. We do not condone such behavior,” Babaseyi said.
He added, “The investigation is ongoing, and officers involved, if found culpable, will be referred to the appropriate authorities. That process has already begun.”
The viral footage has intensified calls for accountability and transparency in how suspects are treated while in police custody, raising critical questions about the enforcement of rights and safety within Nigerian police stations.
