Nigerian businesswoman and philanthropist Dr. (Mrs.) Folorunso Alakija has built and donated a state-of-the-art medical research and training hospital to Osun State University (UNIOSUN). The facility — christened the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital — was formally handed over to the university and has been commissioned for use.
The ultramodern complex, described by reports as a 250-bed medical research and training hospital valued at about N34 billion (roughly $23 million), is intended to strengthen clinical training, boost medical research capacity, and expand access to specialist care in Osun State and the wider region.
According to the university’s official announcement and the donor family, the hospital is equipped with modern clinical and research infrastructure designed to support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, hands-on clinical training, and translational research that links laboratory findings to patient care. The project aligns with UNIOSUN’s stated goal of becoming a competitive centre for medical education and research.
The formal handing-over ceremony to UNIOSUN’s management took place at Famfa Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, where members of the university governing council and management signed the official transfer documents with representatives of the Alakija family. The university’s statement praised the donation as a milestone that will accelerate health workforce development in the state.

A high-profile commissioning of the facility was presided over by former Vice-President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who noted the importance of investing in home-grown medical infrastructure to reduce medical tourism and retain clinical talent in Nigeria. State and national officials, as well as medical and education stakeholders, attended the unveiling.
Family representatives said the project was delivered after consultations with international medical experts, architects and engineers to ensure world-class standards. The hospital is expected to serve both as a referral clinical centre for specialist care and as a practical training ground for medical, nursing and allied health students of UNIOSUN.
UNIOSUN’s public relations office confirmed the university has “taken ownership” of the facility and will integrate it into its academic and clinical programmes. University officials thanked the donor family and emphasized that the hospital will be open to the public as a working teaching hospital and research centre.
Healthcare analysts say gifts of this scale to tertiary institutions can significantly reduce gaps in clinical training capacity and patient care, but they also stress the need for sustainable funding and strong governance to operate large teaching hospitals over the long term.
