INEC Tightens Voter Register Integrity with NIN Verification to Eliminate Duplicate Registrations

Posted on July 16, 2026July 16, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on INEC Tightens Voter Register Integrity with NIN Verification to Eliminate Duplicate Registrations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deploy the National Identification Number (NIN) verification system as part of efforts to detect and eliminate duplicate voter registrations, a move aimed at improving the credibility and integrity of Nigeria’s electoral register ahead of future elections.

The commission disclosed that the initiative will be implemented through a strengthened partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), leveraging the recently enacted National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, which provides a stronger legal framework for collaboration between government institutions on identity management.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), said the integration of NIN verification into the voter registration process would enable the commission to verify applicants’ identities more effectively, identify multiple registrations, and ensure that only eligible Nigerians are captured in the national register of voters.

According to him, the partnership extends beyond identity verification to include broader data validation processes designed to enhance the accuracy of the voters’ register and reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system. He noted that a credible voter register remains fundamental to conducting free, fair and transparent elections.

The development follows INEC’s recent introduction of an online self-service voter registration portal, which requires prospective registrants to verify their National Identification Number before completing the registration process. The digital platform allows eligible Nigerians to register, update their voter information, transfer polling locations, and replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) online.

The commission said the adoption of technology-driven verification measures forms part of its broader strategy to enhance transparency, improve data integrity and strengthen electoral administration as preparations continue for upcoming elections.
