The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a formal warning to the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State over an imminent terrorist threat to the Gbabe community in the Gwanara District of Baruten Local Government Area. The alert was contained in a security intelligence letter dated February 5, 2026, referenced S.122/1/1897, and signed by J.S. Adams on behalf of the State Director of Security, Kwara Command.

According to the DSS correspondence, intelligence reports indicate a possible planned attack on Gbabe community by armed men believed to be members of the suspected Mamuda terrorist group. The warning cites a build-up of armed elements around Kiyoru Settlement, an area close to the expansive Kainji Lake National Park, as a significant cause for concern. The agency noted that local villagers have already observed “hostile displays” by these elements, increasing fears of an impending assault.
The DSS’ letter underscored that the movement and activities of armed groups within and around the national park pose a serious risk to the safety of residents not only in Gbabe but also in neighbouring communities in Baruten and beyond. In urging a proactive security response, the agency called on the Kwara State Police Command to take immediate measures to forestall any potential violence.
“In view of the antecedents of armed groups around Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP), there is a need to emplace necessary security measures to forestall any untoward development,” the document stated, stressing the importance of urgent action.
