Tinubu to Governors: Nigeria Will Be Rebuilt, State Police Reform Is Non-Negotiable

Posted on February 24, 2026February 24, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Tinubu to Governors: Nigeria Will Be Rebuilt, State Police Reform Is Non-Negotiable

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his resolve to reposition Nigeria, declaring that his administration is fully committed to rescuing the country from its economic and security challenges. The President made the remarks during an interfaith breaking of fast with state governors held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he emphasised unity, shared responsibility and bold reforms as key pillars of national recovery.

Addressing the gathering, which included governors from across party lines, Tinubu said the promises he made to Nigerians before assuming office would be fulfilled without delay. He stressed that leadership demands courage and consistency, noting that his government remains focused on delivering practical solutions to long-standing national problems.

Central to his address was the renewed push for the establishment of state police. Tinubu told the governors that the reform has become imperative given the evolving security threats facing different parts of the country. According to him, decentralising policing would strengthen internal security architecture and allow states to respond more effectively to local challenges.

The President explained that the move toward state police is not politically motivated but driven by necessity and realism. He maintained that improved security is the foundation for economic growth, investment stability and citizens’ wellbeing, adding that no meaningful development can occur in an atmosphere of fear and instability.

Tinubu also used the occasion to call on governors to prioritise the welfare of the poor and vulnerable in their states. He urged them to design policies that directly impact young people, women and struggling families, particularly in rural and underserved communities where economic hardship remains severe.

Reflecting on the significance of the Ramadan and Lent seasons, the President highlighted the importance of compassion, sacrifice and collective responsibility. He said the dual observance of the Islamic and Christian fasting periods symbolises Nigeria’s diversity and shared destiny, urging leaders to draw strength from faith and unity.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Hope Uzodimma expressed appreciation for the President’s engagement with the states and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to collaborate with the federal government on security and economic reforms. He described cooperation between both tiers of government as essential for national progress.

Tinubu reiterated that his administration’s economic and fiscal reforms are designed to stabilise the country and create sustainable growth. While acknowledging that reforms often come with short-term difficulties, he assured governors that the long-term benefits would outweigh the temporary pains.

The President further encouraged subnational governments to align with federal initiatives aimed at boosting productivity, expanding revenue generation and attracting investment. He emphasised that synergy among federal and state authorities is crucial for delivering measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.

Concluding his remarks, Tinubu struck an optimistic tone about Nigeria’s trajectory, insisting that the nation is gradually turning a corner. He told the governors that with sustained commitment, institutional reforms and shared sacrifice, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and build a more secure and prosperous future for all.
