Renowned neurosurgeon and national honouree, Professor Wale Sulaiman, has formally declared his intention to seek the governorship of Kwara State in the 2027 general election.
Sulaiman made the announcement on Friday at a stakeholders’ engagement with party leaders and executives in Ajase-Ipo Ward I, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state. The meeting brought together political leaders, former public office holders, and community representatives.
According to the medical expert, his decision to enter the race followed extensive consultations and years of reflection involving diverse communities and interest groups across Kwara State.
He explained that discussions leading to the declaration began several years ago and were shaped by feedback and encouragement from stakeholders in different parts of the state.
“I am not here to commence campaign activities,” Sulaiman clarified. “That will be done at the appropriate time in line with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). What I am doing today is to formally express my interest in contesting for the office of Governor of Kwara State in 2027.”
The neurosurgeon also commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for what he described as visible progress recorded since the administration took office in 2019. He stressed the need for continuity, competence, and strong networks to deepen and sustain the developmental strides already achieved.
Sulaiman added that Kwara State would benefit from leadership with broad credibility and influence at local, national, and international levels, noting that such exposure could attract greater opportunities for the state.
Speaking at the gathering, former Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Bolaji Khaleel, described Sulaiman as a serious and credible aspirant whose experience and professional background could positively impact the state’s development.
Also lending his voice, a former member of the Kwara State House of Assembly (1979–1983), Hon. Abdulkarim Kadiri, recalled that during the buildup to the 2023 elections, several communities had already identified Sulaiman as a figure with the capacity for higher political leadership.
In his remarks, a former Special Adviser to Governor AbdulRazaq from Isin Local Government Area, Mr. Awoyemi, said Sulaiman’s entry into the governorship race had continued to draw support from stakeholders across various local governments.
Awoyemi attributed the growing backing to Sulaiman’s professional accomplishments, public service record, and contributions to both Kwara State and Nigeria at large.
