ICPC Summons Aliko Dangote to Substantiate Allegations as Probe of Former NMDPRA Boss Commences

Posted on December 21, 2025December 21, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on ICPC Summons Aliko Dangote to Substantiate Allegations as Probe of Former NMDPRA Boss Commences

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has invited Africa’s richest man and industrialist, Aliko Dangote, to provide evidence in its ongoing investigation of the immediate past Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed, following serious allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

The invitation comes after Dangote submitted a formal petition to the anti-graft agency, accusing the former NMDPRA chief of financial impropriety and unexplained wealth during his tenure as head of the petroleum regulatory body. The ICPC confirmed that the petition has been accepted and that preliminary investigative steps are already underway.

According to the petition, Farouk Ahmed is alleged to have spent over $7 million on foreign education for his children in Switzerland over a period of several years, an expenditure Dangote claims is inconsistent with the former regulator’s known income as a public officer. The allegations raise concerns about possible illicit enrichment and violations of Nigeria’s Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that Dangote was invited to appear before the commission, or send representatives, to formally adopt his petition and submit documents or other materials that could support the claims made against the former NMDPRA boss. This step is considered standard procedure before a full-scale investigation or prosecution can proceed.

The ICPC is reportedly examining whether the alleged expenditures and other claims in the petition constitute offences under relevant anti-corruption laws, including abuse of office and corruption-related violations outlined in the ICPC Act. Investigators are also expected to scrutinize financial records and related transactions connected to the allegations.

Farouk Ahmed has, however, denied wrongdoing, maintaining that some reports circulating in the media misrepresent the facts. He has described the allegations as misleading and insisted that he remains ready to cooperate with any lawful investigation to clear his name.

The case has drawn significant public attention, given Dangote’s status as Nigeria’s most prominent businessman and the strategic importance of the NMDPRA in regulating the country’s oil and gas midstream and downstream sectors. Civil society groups have called on the ICPC to handle the probe with transparency and without political or corporate interference.

Analysts note that the investigation comes amid broader debates about governance, regulatory oversight, and accountability in Nigeria’s petroleum industry, particularly following recent tensions involving policy decisions and large-scale refinery investments.

The ICPC has emphasized that the invitation extended to Dangote does not imply guilt on the part of the former NMDPRA chief but is part of due process required to establish whether a prima facie case exists. Only after this stage can the commission determine the next legal steps.

As the investigation progresses, Nigerians are watching closely to see whether the high-profile probe will lead to charges, further disclosures, or reforms within the petroleum regulatory framework, reinforcing the country’s ongoing fight against corruption at the highest levels of public office.
