Arsenal took a decisive step toward the 2025–26 Carabao Cup final by beating London rivals Chelsea 3-2 in the first leg of their semi-final tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The Gunners’ spirited performance on the road now gives them a slender advantage heading into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium later next month.
Early Arsenal Dominance and First-Half Lead
Arsenal drew first blood early in the match, with Ben White nodding home from a corner in the 7th minute to put the visitors ahead.
Despite a competitive opening period, Chelsea struggled to convert their possession into goals before halftime.
Goalkeeping Error Sees Arsenal Double Lead
The visitors extended their advantage shortly after the break when Viktor Gyökeres capitalized on a misplayed cross by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, tapping in Arsenal’s second of the night in the 49th minute.
Chelsea Fight Back, But Arsenal Respond
Chelsea were lifted by the introduction of substitute Alejandro Garnacho, who pulled one back in the 57th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
However, Arsenal regained their two-goal cushion when Martín Zubimendi finished a composed team move in the 71st minute, making it 3-1.
Garnacho struck again with a well-taken goal in the 83rd minute, ensuring Chelsea stayed in the tie at 3-2 heading into the home return leg.
What This Means Ahead of Second Leg
The slim advantage gives Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal the upper hand in the two-legged tie, but Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea remain very much in contention with the late away goal keeping hopes alive.
Arsenal currently sit atop the Premier League and are contenders across multiple competitions this season, making this victory a statement in their cup run.
