In a notable shift in African football administration, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Samson Adamu of Nigeria as its Acting Secretary General, following the resignation of long‑serving official Véron Mosengo‑Omba.
The change was confirmed on Sunday, 29 March 2026, during a CAF Congress held in Cairo, Egypt, where the executive committee’s proposal to elevate Adamu was ratified by member delegates.
Adamu, who previously served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, will oversee the organisation’s administrative and operational duties on an interim basis until the next CAF General Assembly, which will later formalise the permanent holder of the role.
His appointment marks a historic milestone for Nigerian football governance: he becomes the first Nigerian to hold the Confederation’s top administrative position since CAF’s founding nearly seven decades ago in 1957.
Mosengo‑Omba, a Swiss‑Congolese football administrator who had been CAF Secretary General since 2021, resigned from the role on the same day. In his resignation, he cited a desire to pursue personal projects after over 30 years in international football administration.
CAF’s Secretary General serves as the organisation’s chief executive officer, responsible for the day‑to‑day administration of Africa’s premier football body, including implementing executive committee decisions and managing legal and operational matters across its competitions and member associations.
Adamu’s elevation has been welcomed by stakeholders as a boost for Nigerian representation and an affirmation of his experience within CAF’s internal structure, particularly his work coordinating major continental competitions and football development initiatives.
As the continent’s football governance transitions, attention now turns to the upcoming CAF General Assembly, where the next permanent Secretary General will be elected.
