Katsina Govt Faces Public Outrage as Bandits Raid Villages Amid Plan to Release Suspects

Posted on January 15, 2026January 15, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Katsina Govt Faces Public Outrage as Bandits Raid Villages Amid Plan to Release Suspects

The Katsina State Government has come under intense public scrutiny following fresh bandit attacks on rural communities, even as officials move ahead with plans to release dozens of suspected bandits as part of an ongoing peace initiative. The development has sparked outrage among residents, civil society groups and security analysts who question the timing and wisdom of the proposed releases.

On Tuesday night, January 13, 2026, armed bandits reportedly stormed several villages located east of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, sending residents fleeing for safety. Although no official casualty figure has been released, eyewitnesses described gunfire, looting and widespread panic, further highlighting the fragile security situation in the state.

The attacks came barely weeks after reports emerged that the Katsina State Ministry of Justice had written to the Chief Judge, seeking the release of about 70 suspected and convicted bandits currently in custody. The request, reportedly backed by provisions of the Katsina State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, was linked to peace negotiations with armed groups operating in some frontline local government areas.

Government officials have defended the move, arguing that dialogue with so-called repentant bandits has previously led to the release of abducted persons and reduced attacks in some communities. Authorities insist the strategy is aimed at ending years of violence through reconciliation rather than prolonged military confrontation.

However, critics say the renewed raids expose serious flaws in the peace-deal approach. They argue that continued attacks undermine claims of progress and raise fears that freeing suspects could embolden criminal networks rather than weaken them.

Civil society organisations, including northern advocacy groups, have strongly condemned the planned releases, describing them as a dangerous precedent that rewards violence while denying justice to victims. They warn that communities ravaged by killings, kidnappings and displacement may lose faith in the justice system if suspects are freed without accountability.

Adding to the controversy are reports alleging that some local government councils in Katsina have allocated funds for negotiations and payments linked to bandit groups, a claim that has further fueled public anger and calls for transparency in the state’s security spending.

Security analysts caution that while dialogue can be a useful tool, it must be backed by strong enforcement and credible guarantees. They argue that releasing detainees during ongoing attacks risks sending the wrong message to armed groups still operating across the state.

Residents of affected communities have expressed frustration and fear, questioning how peace can be declared while villages continue to come under assault. Many say they feel abandoned and are demanding stronger protection rather than concessions to armed groups.

As pressure mounts, the Katsina State Government now faces growing demands to review its security strategy, balance peace efforts with justice, and reassure citizens that protecting lives and communities remains the top priority amid one of Nigeria’s most persistent insecurity crises.
