Widespread outrage has followed a fresh threat by Boko Haram, which has demanded a ₦5 billion ransom and issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the release of more than 400 women and children abducted in Borno State.
The victims were reportedly kidnapped in March 2026 when fighters linked to Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS), a faction of Boko Haram, launched a coordinated attack on Ngoshe, a community in Gwoza. The assault left residents displaced and families torn apart, with hundreds taken into captivity.
Tensions escalated after a video surfaced on Sunday, allegedly released by the insurgent group and circulated via the Facebook page of the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA). In the footage, a masked speaker issued what was described as a “final warning” to the Federal Government and concerned stakeholders, insisting that the ransom demand must be met within 72 hours or face unspecified consequences.
The development has sparked condemnation across various quarters, with civil society groups, community leaders, and citizens expressing alarm over both the scale of the abduction and the renewed boldness of insurgent elements in the North-East.
Local sources indicate that many of the abducted victims are internally displaced persons who had only recently returned or resettled in the area, making the incident even more distressing. Advocacy groups have called on the Federal Government to act swiftly, prioritizing the safe recovery of the victims while also addressing the persistent security vulnerabilities in the region.
Security analysts note that the incident underscores the continuing threat posed by insurgent factions in the Lake Chad Basin, despite years of military operations. The use of ransom demands and propaganda videos is seen as part of a broader strategy to exert pressure on authorities and maintain relevance.
As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Federal Government of Nigeria confirming engagement with the demands. However, calls for decisive action continue to grow, with many urging a response that balances urgency with long-term security considerations.
The situation remains fluid, with families of the abducted victims anxiously awaiting updates as the ultimatum deadline approaches.
