Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers have suffered a potential setback after defender Felix Agu was forced off due to injury in Werder Bremen’s 1–0 victory over St. Pauli on Saturday.
Just days prior to the match, Agu had earned his place among the 23 players named in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin. His selection was seen as a strong endorsement of his form and defensive capabilities.
Agu, normally a left-back, started for Bremen in the Bundesliga match at the Weserstadion, but he was unable to complete the game.
Reports indicate that he sustained the injury before halftime, after putting in a solid performance in the first half. He required assistance off the pitch, signaling that the issue was serious enough to stop him from continuing.
While the exact nature of the injury remains unconfirmed, sources suggest that Agu may have sustained an ankle problem, which would put his availability for Nigeria’s next games in doubt.
Earlier reports had already flagged him for pain in his left shin during a training session ahead of the match. At that point, he was said to have been observed from a golf cart after suffering the impact.
If Agu is unable to recover in time, Nigeria will lose a key defensive option heading into the vital World Cup qualifying fixtures. The Super Eagles face a demanding schedule and cannot afford to be weakened by injuries in their backline.
Medical staff from Werder Bremen and the Nigeria Football Federation are expected to assess Agu’s condition in the coming days. His recovery timeline and fitness report will determine whether he remains in the squad or is replaced ahead of the qualifiers.
Nigeria fans and the Super Eagles camp will be watching closely, hoping that this injury does not derail Agu’s role in the qualification campaign.
