Rail services along the Kaduna–Abuja corridor were disrupted on Monday morning after a passenger train travelling from Kaduna to the Federal Capital Territory reportedly collided with another train on the same track, forcing operations to halt and leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
The incident occurred during an early morning trip on the busy inter-city route widely used by travellers commuting between Kaduna State and Abuja. Passengers onboard the Abuja-bound train said the journey was abruptly interrupted when the train ran into another train along the corridor.
Eyewitness accounts from passengers indicated that the impact brought the train to an immediate stop, creating panic among travellers inside the coaches. Many passengers were forced to remain inside the train while railway officials assessed the situation.
Videos circulating on social media shortly after the incident appeared to show damaged wagons and rail equipment along the track, suggesting the passenger train may have collided with a freight train operating on the line.
The disruption prevented the train from completing its journey to Abuja, leaving passengers stranded for several hours along the route while authorities worked to determine the extent of the damage and clear the track.
Some passengers were also reported to have sustained minor injuries during the incident, although full details about casualties had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report.
Officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the agency responsible for operating the Kaduna–Abuja rail service, were said to have begun preliminary assessments to determine the cause of the collision and coordinate recovery operations.
The Kaduna–Abuja standard gauge railway remains one of Nigeria’s most important transport corridors, serving thousands of passengers daily who rely on the service for safe and relatively fast travel between the northern city of Kaduna and the nation’s capital.
Monday’s disruption once again highlights operational and safety challenges facing Nigeria’s rail system, which has in recent years experienced occasional derailments, technical breakdowns, and service interruptions.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation into the incident while working to restore normal train operations along the corridor as quickly as possible.
