The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) will officially resume operations on Tuesday, October 29, 2025, after a temporary suspension to allow for critical maintenance works. The suspension, which lasted several weeks, was carried out to ensure the safety, comfort, and reliability of train operations along the corridor connecting Delta and Kogi States. In a statement released on Sunday, the NRC assured passengers that the service is now ready to recommence with improved safety measures and enhanced operational efficiency.
According to the management of the NRC, the suspension period was necessary for carrying out comprehensive system checks, track repairs, and equipment upgrades on the route. The corporation explained that the maintenance exercise was part of its broader commitment to keeping Nigeria’s standard gauge railway infrastructure in optimal condition. It added that during the downtime, engineers and technical teams worked tirelessly to resolve issues identified in the last operational review, particularly in sections affected by wear and weather-related deterioration.
The Warri–Itakpe corridor, which is one of Nigeria’s key standard gauge rail lines, serves as a vital link between the South-South and North-Central regions. The resumption of train operations is expected to boost economic and social activities, providing safer and faster travel options for passengers and freight operators. The NRC stated that the line will commence with seven coaches, six for standard class passengers and one for business class, ensuring a comfortable and convenient experience for commuters.
In preparation for the relaunch, NRC confirmed that its online ticketing platform will reopen at 12 noon on Monday, October 27, 2025. Passengers will be able to book tickets electronically through the official portal or purchase them at designated train stations along the route. The corporation urged commuters to make early bookings to avoid last-minute rush and ensure smooth boarding processes. It also reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for ticket racketeering, warning staff and passengers to comply strictly with official ticketing procedures.
To guarantee safe operations, the NRC announced that temporary speed restrictions (TSRs) will be imposed in certain sections of the rail line as part of post-maintenance monitoring. These restrictions are designed to allow engineers to assess the performance of newly serviced tracks and ensure all safety systems function as intended. The corporation noted that the restrictions would be reviewed periodically as stability and performance data are collected.
Passengers and stakeholders who experienced inconveniences during the suspension have been assured of a significantly improved travel experience. The NRC expressed gratitude for their patience and understanding, explaining that the maintenance effort was essential to forestall future breakdowns and ensure sustainability of service delivery. It also emphasized that the corporation’s goal is to make rail transport a reliable, safe, and affordable option for Nigerians, especially in an era where road travel remains fraught with security and infrastructural challenges.
The Warri–Itakpe train service, which traverses key communities such as Agbor, Uromi, and Ajaokuta, plays a major role in facilitating inter-state connectivity. Its resumption will ease pressure on road transport while supporting trade, tourism, and regional integration. Economists and industry watchers believe the service will contribute to lowering logistics costs and improving access to markets for goods produced in both the South and North.
Furthermore, the resumption marks another step in Nigeria’s broader railway modernization agenda, which aims to expand standard gauge lines across the country. The NRC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the nation’s rail infrastructure meets international standards, stressing that safety and service quality remain top priorities. It also pledged to maintain transparent communication with passengers about any future operational adjustments.
As the Warri–Itakpe service returns to the tracks, many passengers have welcomed the news with optimism. Regular commuters between Delta and Kogi States say the train remains one of the most convenient and affordable ways to travel long distances in comfort and safety. Business owners who rely on the corridor for cargo movement also expressed confidence that the return of train operations will enhance trade efficiency and reduce transportation bottlenecks.
With operations set to resume on October 29, 2025, the NRC has encouraged travelers to plan ahead, comply with safety regulations, and report any misconduct or irregularities encountered during their journey. The corporation maintained that the resumption is not merely a return to service but a renewed commitment to providing Nigerians with a dependable and secure railway system that supports mobility, commerce, and national development.
