The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has clarified why a scheduled public lecture by former presidential candidate Peter Obi did not hold on its campus on Saturday, stating that the event was declined due to late notification and security considerations.
According to the university’s position, the organisers of the lecture did not give adequate advance notice required for proper institutional approval and logistical planning. OAU emphasized that such events typically require sufficient time for due process, coordination, and risk assessment, particularly when hosting high-profile political figures and large gatherings.
The lecture, which was slated for 9:00 a.m., was expected to take place at the university before Obi was to proceed to a separate opposition political summit in Ibadan scheduled for noon the same day.
University authorities also pointed to safety and security concerns as part of the decision not to approve the use of its facilities. While no specific threat was disclosed, the institution maintained that safeguarding students, staff, and visitors remains a top priority in its event approval process.
Despite the cancellation, the planned lecture and subsequent political engagements reportedly continued outside the university premises, as originally scheduled by the organisers.
The development has drawn attention due to the prominence of the speaker and the timing of the event, but OAU has maintained that its decision was strictly guided by institutional policy and security protocol rather than political considerations.
